Frequently Asked Questions

Volleyball FAQ

General Information:

Where is SCVC located?
SCVC is a competitive club volleyball program for athletes living on the Sunshine Coast.

How long is the season?
The club volleyball season starts with tryouts in late November/early December and ends with the last tournaments occurring in late April or early May.

When are practices and games?
We establish our practice schedule when we meet with our coaches in November. Our practice schedule is dependent on our coaches’ availabilities and the availability of facilities. Teams will practice twice a week, on weeknights for 1½ to 2 hours.

Games take place in a tournament format organized by Volleyball BC. Volleyball BC tournaments take place on weekends, either on Saturday, Sunday, or both days. No tournaments take place on weekdays. One exception is provincial championships which may take place on a Friday preceding a weekend or on a Monday following a weekend. The Volleyball BC event schedule can be found on their website.

Exhibition or friendly matches may take place against other teams on a weeknight or on a weekend. Some clubs host their own private tournaments. These usually take place on weekends as well.

Coaches will determine which events they plan on attending and will establish a tournament schedule which will be communicated to the athletes as soon as possible.

How many teams do you have?
We currently have competitive teams for girls from the 14U to 18U age categories. The number of teams each season is dependent upon the number of coaches available and information on which teams will be having tryouts will be posted on our website and Instagram as soon as possible. We also run a Train and Play program for girls and boys in grades 6 and 7 later in the spring.

Tryout Period:

When and where are tryouts?
Tryouts take place in late November/early December. Dates, times, and locations will be posted on the SCVC website and Instagram. For additional information on tryouts, please see our Tryout Policy.

What team should I tryout for?

 2023-2024 Season Age Categories:

  • 14U: September 2009 – December 2010

  • 15U: September 2008 – December 2009

  • 16U: September 2007 – December 2008

  • 17U: September 2006 – December 2007

  • 18U: September 2005 – December 2006

What if I want to try out for 2 different age categories?
You may try out for any teams that you meet the age criteria for but, you will have to pay the tryout fee for each tryout. Please see our Tryout Policy and Playing-up Policy for additional information.

How many players are on each team?
Most teams have 12 players. However, it is ultimately up to the coaches to decide how many players they want to take, and they may choose more or less.

How and when will athletes be notified of team selection and information?
Athletes will be offered a position on a team via email within 24-48 hours of the last tryout. Once an athlete accepts their spot on the team, the Club will email you more information about training schedules, payment, registration, etc. Team lists will also be posted on the SCVC website as soon as teams are finalized.

Sometimes there are delays in confirming teams. This is a result of having to wait for an athlete’s commitment. We appreciate your patience during this time and we will always expedite the process to the best of our ability.

During Club Season:

What are the costs?
Costs come from 3 sources:

  • First, team fees will be between $500 and $800, depending on the number of tournaments entered. These costs include uniforms, team gear, gym booking fees, tournament fees, equipment; coaching education, coaches per diems and honorariums; club management and administration fees.

  • Second, all athletes will need to register with Volleyball BC (~$76).

  • Third, any tournaments entered and costs associated will be paid equally by each team member. Expenses such as hotel, transportation (ferry and gas), food and coach’s expenses (hotel, food, ferry, gas) are to be paid equally by the team.

What are the additional travel costs?
Travel costs such as hotels, ferry travel, gas and food are not covered in the team fee. All costs are additional and are calculated based on tournament location, accommodations and travel for each team. Additional travel costs in the 2023 club season for each player was approximately $800-$1000.

I may have problems paying my fees. Is there anything that can be done to help ease the financial burden?
Please see out Club Handbook for information on financial assistance.

My daughter participates in other school or club teams in other sports. Can she still play for SCVC?Absolutely. Our teams practice twice a week, and our coaches try to schedule practices so that all team members can be present as much as possible. If there are conflicts, please discuss with your coach.

Are the coaches certified?
All our head coaches are certified by the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) and follow the Volleyball BC Coaches’ Code of Conduct. All SCVC staff members have undergone a Criminal Record Check as well.
